I had cycled in to the city to buy tickets for an international motorcycling event, and as I was riding around the city square, the enchanting strains of a bamboo flute drifted toward me.
I followed the sound and sat down near the guy busking on Main Street.
I had a great time relaxing in the sun, listening to some live music and watching the crowd go by.
It wasn’t until I was preparing to leave, that I noticed right next to us there was some very noisy road construction underway.
I didn’t even hear it.
I was listening so intently to the music that I didn’t notice the jarring din of the jackhammers and generators.
(You can see the plastic security barriers in the photo.)
Just like a radio, I had tuned out the sound of the construction and tuned in to the beautiful music.
Over Christmas and New Year we are all too aware that the values of charity and peace get lost in a whirl of sales, shopping, busyness and stress.
Busyness is the enemy of compassion.
Compassion = time + acceptance.
But with no time as we rush around with a fuse short on acceptance, we can run out of compassion.
If you find your Christmas cheer and the peace of your New Year holidays gets lost in the stress of the season, follow the example of the radio!
A radio can receive all stations at once, but only tunes into one station at a time.
Like a radio, you can choose to tune out the negative and tune in to the positive!
You can tune out that off-the-cuff comment from an overworked shop assistant and walk away with a smile.
You can tune out what the think your in-laws said last Christmas, and tune in to the fact that they love your kids.
If you find a grump, tune out your instinct of grumping back and tune in to the children’s laughter, the bird song or a smile from a stranger.
And if you catch yourself being the grump, spin your dial and tune out your thoughts of rushing and running and tune in to everything that's going great.
Right about now when everyone's tired, overworked and strung out, let's get to spreading the real spirit of Christmas and consider a resolution for the New Year … .
to tune out the 10% that's wrong with your life and tune in to the 90% that's right.
That's gotta be good for everyone
